Born in Rosà (Vicenza) on 15 September 1900, Francesco Gianese obtained a degree in physics and mathematics from the Technical Institute of Bologna, before enrolling in a two-year preparatory course in engineering at the University of Bologna and then at the Royal School of Engineering, where he graduated on 27 November 1924. After completing his studies, he moved permanently to Milan, where he opened a construction company that he ran until his death on 1 April 1967.

A goalkeeper who grew up in the "Boys", the youth team of Bologna FC, Gianese played in charity friendlies during the war, then was Modelli's reserve and finally a starter for three seasons, coming close to winning the Scudetto (the National championship) in 1923-24, the season in which he won the gold medal as the best Italian goalkeeper in the "Goalkeeper Competition" organised by the newspaper "La Gazzetta dello Sport". He made 59 appearances in red and blue in the Championship between 1920 and 1924.
