Gastone Martelli was born in S. Maria in Duno – Bentivoglio (BO) on 24 July 1908. After obtaining his classical high school diploma, he enrolled in the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Bologna, transferring to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery after a year. He graduated on 8 November 1933 with a thesis entitled "Bacteriological investigations on milk from the Bologna market". He died in Sermide (MN) on 26 October 1961.

 

An eclectic player, capable of playing both as a defender and an attacking full-back, Martelli came up through the Bologna youth ranks, winning the Central European Cup in 1932 and 1934. He made 94 appearances and scored one goal in red and blue in the Championship between 1929 and 1935.
